An electronic journey into the training and event log of an endurance and multi-sport athlete

- After four years of long-distance running (5k, 10k, half-marathons) I got a little burnt out and decided to try my hand at triathlons. This blog is a journey into my training regime, as well as the play-by-play experiences I have had while competing in these amazingly fun events!

Papa Johns 10 Miler
Feeling pretty happy with my time today, considering the lack of training. Had a horrible night's sleep - thunderstorms late and the dog was up barking for a few hours. Had one too many beers and no water, so that didn't help. Honestly thought I would have to walk most, if not all of it, with the way I felt this morning. Feeling refreshed and happy that I did it now that it's over, though. Met a lot of Landsharks out pre-race for a photo and to wish everyone good luck. The gun went off and I focused on getting through the first three miles before hitting the park. I did 4:1 intervals and felt strong. In the park, my goal was to walk the hills and run anything flat or down-hill. Think I may have lost a little bit of time there - and knew it was true when I uploaded the Garmin and my time at miles 4,5,6 were significantly lower than on the way in and then out of the park. Three miles left when we leave the park and it's relatively flat except for the wicked hill at mile 9. Walked all of this one (about three minutes total) and then just had one, one-minute break between then and coming across the finish line. About halfway through the race I made my goal a sub 2-hour race (my best 10 miler is 1:50:06), so I figured 1) that was doable, and 2) I would be happy with that since my only goal getting out of bed this morning was just to finish. So... I stepped across the finish line and came in at 1:58:20. I will take it. It's my second-best time for that course, and considering I've been a lazy bum so far this year, felt it was nothing to shake a stick at. The KDF mini is in a month, and I feel I need/want to get into a routine of biking/running these next four weeks so I can do well with that one too. The new course, which was started last year, is almost completely flat, so I feel I should be able to do pretty well - if I would just train! But for now, I sit here in my sweats with my dog, and look forward to a nice little nap before cheering Kentucky on in the Final Four. Go Cats!
